When mistakes are made, they’re rectified in such a lavish a manner that they leave you longing for more to be made. They can all too often veer into a creepy subservience, and sincerity isn’t, perhaps, their strong suit, but Americans have this funny thing about wanting to keep their clientele – and make money. Money in France, however, is viewed in the same way that sex is in the States: everybody wants it and everybody wants to know how much other people are getting but they all feel a little bit queasy about making their interest known. Certainly at Air France the old nationalised ethos still seems to prevail: customers are just a nuisance – especially if they’re not even two years old.
